Health in Spirit

Relational Connectedness

The Bible has some pretty glowing promises when it comes to our health and well-being. "Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones" (Proverbs 3:7-8). "My son, give attention to my words incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your site; keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those who find them and health to all their body" (Proverbs 4:20-22).

Spiritual health is all about relationships, our relationship with God, our relationship with others, and our relationship with ourselves. When Jesus was asked what is the greatest commandment (Matthew 22:36-40) he said we are to love God with all our heart, mind, and strength. He followed with saying the second commandment is to love others as we love ourselves. This teaching is the foundation of our spiritual component to health.

When it comes to our health and well-being and our pursuit of the abundant life, we do well to pay attention to God's admonitions. God is our loving Heavenly Father and as any loving parent would, he wants what's best for us. God is also omniscient (all-knowing). He even knows the future. He knows the outcome our choices are going to have before we make them. As a result we know God can be trusted. With this in mind, we can conclude that when God tells us to do something, it's for our benefit. When he tell us to avoid something, it's for our protection. "Good and upright is the Lord he teaches the humble his way all the paths of the Lord are loving kindness and truth" (Psalm 23:8-10).

God's nature will not change. When we do life God's way, we experience better health outcomes. Therefore, we do well to surrender to God's goodness and allow him to be in control of our lives.

The Problem:

Because of our stubborn, selfish nature, we are reluctant to surrender control of our lives. We like being in control. However, the control we think we have is an illusion.

The Solution:

When we understand God's intentions toward us, The Bible becomes a plethora of useful advice for our health and well-being. When we surrender to God's goodness, and give up trying to do life our own way, we experience a supernatural peace that is extraordinarily good for our physical vitality. "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled nor let it be fearful" (John 14:27).

This is why Jesus taught: "Come to me all who are weary and heavy – laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:30).
